The Green Standard EPD System™

The Green Standard developed and operates the first Environmental Product Declaration System created to meet the needs of North American manufacturers and purchasers. From the outset, our primary goal has been to support manufacturers headquartered in this hemisphere with use of a type 3 eco-label useful in all global markets.

We began this support with developing with Interiors & Sources Magazine a series of Green Guides to NeoCon and Greenbuild featuring an EcoLibrary describing best global practices in green product design, evaluation and certification. These publications helped manufacturers and purchasers in North America understand the diverse types of tools available, what each covers and when to use several together.

In the 2007 Green Guide to NeoCon, Environmental Product Declarations were introduced and examples of EPDs for products manufactured in Europe were shown. Within a year, progressive manufacturers stepped forward to begin developing them to provide purchasers with a new level of transparency in product information.

In 2008, The Green Standard created a beta of its EPD System and began to work with leading manufacturers to register their EPDs and communicate the results of their EPD Reports to the North American marketplace. First, we posted an EPD from InterfaceFLOR on a carpet tile product and soon after posted one from Bentley Prince Street on a carpet broadloom product.

In 2009, we added a second EPD from InterfaceFLOR and a first from Vetrazzo on recycled glass surfacing. We invite you to review these next generation resources in the process of evaluating product options for building construction and rehabilitation.

In 2010, Dr. Eva Schmincke, broadly considered one of the world's global experts in Life Cycle Assessment and Environmental Product Declarations, has become Manager of our EPD System. She served with other leading environmental scientists from around the world on the ISO committee that created Standard 14025 for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Dr. Schminke also serves as Chair of the EU Committee 250 overseeing development of PCRs and works as a Senior Consultant to Five Winds International. She can be reached at e.schmincke@fivewinds.com
