| The Green Standard launched the BRIGHT GREEN, BRIGHT FUTURE™ campaign on November 19 during the Greenbuild Conference in Boston. At the launch event in the grand lobby of the Institute of Contemporary Art’s new building on the waterfront of downtown Boston, The Green Standard introduced the first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) System – the first and only EPD System in the US. EPDs are considered the cutting edge resource in the emerging global product information system. This system provides purchasers with all aspects of a product’s performance – environmental, human health, life cycle cost, mechanical, safety, etc. – in a single document. |
| “The Green Standard’s goals in developing this system are twofold,” notes TGS President Deborah Dunning. “First, we want to support manufacturers to engage in product eco-design using life cycle assessment software to measure each product’s environmental impacts. Second, we want to empower purchasers to use these life cycle-based product biographies to make wise choices that lead to better health, greater productivity and higher quality of life for us all.” |
| With the introduction of The Green Standard EPD System™, U.S. manufacturers have an opportunity to cost-effectively complete and credibly communicate life cycle information to a broad audience. In addition to their EPD System, The Green Standard has developed the Gaia Product Profile, an innovative tool for integrating diverse types of performance information into a single and comprehensive document. This web-tool provides users with a layered approach to product information, enabling them to access information according to their knowledge level, project nature, and time available. |
| At the event, guests learned how all types of product performance information are integrated into an EPD, enabling them to efficiently make wise product choices. They got a sneak preview of profiles from Shaw and Knoll, the two manufacturers who are early adopters of The Green Standard Environmental Product Declaration System. |
| The EPD launch is the first program of a yearlong educational initiative designed to empower manufacturers and purchasers to confidently navigate the environmental landscape while making lighter footprints. To that end, The Green Standard also introduced the Green Purchasing Accredited Professional Training Program designed to complement the LEED® Accredited Professional Program of the U.S. Green Building Council. Attendees learned how participation in this training program can empower them to make a contribution to a sustainable future by using scientifically robust yet user-friendly product certification programs. Most importantly, they learned how the program will help them replace “green wash” with resources requiring third party certification of environmental and sustainability attributes. |
