Deborah Dunning is a respected advocate who has nearly 25 years of experience in the field of sustainability. After a 20–year career in sustainable community development during which she served as executive director of one of the largest historic preservation development organizations in the U.S., Deborah founded The International Design Center for the Environment, now called The Green Standard. Her founding vision focused on creating an organization that would work collaboratively with not for profit and for profit entities in transforming production and consumption.
From 2000 to 2002, Deborah was project director for The Green Standard's "EPA KnowRoom", a 3,000 square-foot exhibit on green building design, construction and product selection created for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Between 2006 and 2008 she served as a member of the "LCA into LEED" project of the U.S. Green Building Council and a task force member of the Life Cycle Initiative of the UN Environment Program. Additionally, she has been a volunteer member of the stakeholder councils of the Business & Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) and the Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI), developing sustainable product standards with NSF International.
Beginning in 2007, Deborah took on the role of guest editor for “The Green Guide to NeoCon” and “The Green Guide to Greenbuild”, developed in partnership with Interiors & Sources magazine. She was a primary writer of The Green Guide EcoLibrary™, a compendium of articles introducing specifiers and purchasers to best practices globally in green purchasing. After relinquishing that role in mid-2008, Deborah has focused on developing the BRIGHT GREEN, BRIGHT FUTURE™ campaign, launching the first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) System in the U.S., creating the Green Standard Accredited Professional Training and Whole Life Thinking programs.
